When I Grow Up
When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic
Illustrated by Wes Hargis
2011
I've always been skeptical of celebrities writing children's books, so when I saw that Weird Al had written a book, I had no interest on reading it. But then I started reading good reviews and decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I loved When I Grow Up.
Billy gets up in front of his class to share what he would like to be when he grows up. His never ending list of prospects is hilarious! And when his teacher tells him he needs to decide on one thing he'll be when he grows up, he gives the best answer:
"See, I'm only eight now, so frankly I'm hopin'
You'll cut me some slack if I leave my options open.
Let's just wait and find out what my future brings-
Hey, I might have time to do all those things!"
The rhymes flow with ease, the illustrations are great, and the story has a specially sweet ending for all of us teachers out there.
